Employee Talks – David Gamble
In this interview, David Gamble, Product Manager at Ingenuity Cloud Services, shares his journey navigating the fast-paced world of product management. From learning to communicate effectively with tech teams, to mastering the art of prioritisation, David offers valuable insights into what it takes to thrive in a PM role.
David reflects on how customer feedback reshaped his view of product value—highlighting the importance of simplicity over sophistication—and emphasizing the power of curiosity, cross-functional collaboration, and clear alignment to drive meaningful outcomes.
What’s been the biggest learning curve for you as a Product Manager?
One of the biggest challenges has been learning to work effectively with tech leads. At first, it was intimidating to keep up with conversations when others had such deep technical knowledge.
But I soon realised that my value as a PM isn’t in knowing all the tech details—it’s in being the bridge. My role is to clearly communicate the challenges faced by our customers and the business, then collaborate with engineers to ensure we’re solving the right problems. I’ve learned that clarity of purpose and alignment go further than trying to speak every line of code.
What’s one skill you didn’t expect to be so important in product management?
Prioritisation—hands down. There’s never a shortage of good ideas, but the key is deciding which ones to act on first.
Our roadmap is always brimming with exciting features and improvements. With input coming from across the business, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Everyone’s ideas have merit, but the real skill lies in identifying what will deliver the most value, right now. Learning to say “not now” is just as important as saying “yes.”
How do you manage priorities when everything feels urgent?
When everything feels like a priority, it’s essential to zoom out and focus on what will make the biggest impact.
We score initiatives based on effort, revenue potential, and cost savings. From there, we align on what will move the needle the most in the shortest amount of time. The secret is constantly communicating the bigger picture—helping each team understand how their work fits into the broader goals.
It’s a juggling act, but when everyone understands the “why,” it becomes easier to focus on the “what” and “when.”
What advice would you give to someone just starting their PM journey?
Dive into conversations with people across the business—from sales to support to engineering. The beauty of product management is the unique vantage point you have to see the whole picture.
Learn how people experience your product, listen closely to customer feedback, and explore how your competitors operate. Every conversation is a chance to uncover insights, shape strategy, and identify opportunities that others might miss. The more you understand the ecosystem, the better you can drive meaningful outcomes.
Can you share an experience where customer feedback shaped your perspective on a product?
While redesigning the management dashboard for our cloud services, we initially focused on advanced features and a sleek interface. Internally, it felt like a win—until we shared it with customers.
One admin summed it up perfectly: “I just want to log in and quickly see if everything’s working.” That feedback was a turning point. We stripped back the complexity, surfaced key health indicators, and made everyday actions easier to find.
It was a clear reminder: delivering value isn’t about how sophisticated a product is—it’s about how simple it is for customers to use. That mindset now guides every product decision I make.
